Qatar Steel, the country’s famed steel-maker, is setting up a new plant to cope with the rising demand for steel in the Qatari as well as the regional market. Qatar Steel (QS) singed a contract with Siemens VAI to establish a new steel plant with the capacity of 1.1m tons per year to meet the growing demand in the region which has been witnessing massive infrastructure development. The deal was inked by Ali Hassan Al Muraikhi, General Manager of QS, and Norbert Petremaier, Vice President of Siemens VAI, at Qatar Steel’s head office here yesterday. The new plant will be set up adjacent to the old one and is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2013. The plant will be equipped with ultra high power 110 tons electric arc furnace, 110 T ladle furnace and six strand high speed billet caster coupled with sophisticated fume extraction system for zero emission. The plant will be designed based on the best technology to ensure maximum output at optimum cost. QS is keen to be in the forefront among steel manufacturing companies in the region to reduce emissions in order to protect the environment and make the steel manufacturing process most environment-friendly, a statement issued by the steel-maker said.
