Rebar rolling at Qatar Steel’s ultra-modern rolling mill – RM II in Mesaieed. DOHA: Qatar Steel, one of the leading steel producers in the Middle East and Arabian Gulf, achieved a record production of more than one million tonnes of rebar at RM II, the company’s ultra-modern rolling mill. Ali Bin Hassan Al Muraikhi, Managing Director & General Manager of Qatar Steel, said: “This major achievement would not have been possible without the support and relentless efforts by our dedicated and motivated team to improve the company’s operational and maintenance efficiency.” RM II was commissioned in 2007 with a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes/annum of rebar with sizes ranging from 8 mm to 40 mm in diameter. The mill, which applies international steel standards to fulfill customer’s requirements, has achieved its design capacity in the first three years of operations and excelled with the milestone production of over 1m tonnes in 2015. “Qatar Steel constantly focuses on implementing new innovative technologies to fulfill its commitment towards quality and productivity without compromising the safety and sustainable practices being implemented at the company,” said Al Muraikhi. Qatar Steel is one of few companies which have initiated and are practicing sustainable development in line with the priority areas identified in Qatar National vision 2030. The company has launched several key initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption, recycle process wastes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Qatar Steel is also committed to improving health, safety and environment. An awarding ceremony had been held together with Primetals, the supplier of Rolling Mill II, to mark this milestone achievement. Primetals Technologies congratulated Qatar Steel for the achievement of 1m tonnes of annual production record in 2015 produced on Rolling Mill II in Mesaieed Industrial City.
The mill was contracted in 2005 to VAI Pomini (now Primetals Technologies) on a full-turnkey basis; it started the industrial operation in 2007. The designed capacity was 700,000 tons of rolled products per year. However, along the years Qatar Steel’s mill operators were able not only to saturate but eventually to exceed the rated figure, until the 2015 record result of 1m tonnes, which tops by more than 44 percent of the rated figure. The Peninsula
